Domain Monetization News
This is a new blog dedicated to the subject of Internet domain name monetization and to help people understand what domain parking is, and isn’t. Domains continue to be interesting investments and very similar to real estate — limited supply with high-demand in certain areas.
The word domain relates to a territory or a space. On the web, it means you own some “namespace” on the internet. It means that anyone in the world that types “nameyouhavechosen.com” goes to your territory or space. Think about how powerful that is.
The bottomline is this:
- Domain ownership follows basic business and marketing logic. If you were opening a retail shoe shop, you might find a heavy foot traffic area in a mall and hang a sign out that let’s people know what you do — something like “Best Shoes”.
- Having a name that makes it easy for people to understand the value you provide will increase the chances that people will choose your business to help them.
- It is cheap (less than $10/yr) and easy to get a domain. Places like godaddy or google make it very easy to do.
- The question then is, now what? How can you make money? There are a number of different avenues to follow with the new territory you now own.
- For many, the answer is domain parking. This is the easy route. Again, domain parking services like google, sedo, or domain sponsor (each one has a very different set of qualifications) may do all the “heavy lifting”. They take your name, create a web site, show advertising, and send you a check. That’s like purchasing a vacant lot and partnering with a real estate developer — then splitting the value.
- The other route is to develop a basic web site yourself — especially if you have some unique knowledge to offer the community. People underestimate how easy this is to do these days. In many cases all you need is the web browser software you are using to read this now. You can work with affordable web hosting companies like host gator, or godaddy. Or you can work with blog hoster companies like google, wordpress, or typepad. You then can set up an advertising relationship with google adsense, yahoo, or kontera to provide ads on your site or blog. Because you’re typically providing more value for the visitor than what is normally provided through domain parking and you’re providing more of the development work, you’ll keep more of the advertising dollars.
This is not intended to be a site that condones cybersquatting (infringing on trademarked names) or that promotes get rich quick schemes. I started this site because there were very few resources on the Internet that had basic advice on what was happening in the domain investment space. Most of them just wanted to sell you an eBook or some newsletter.
I’m also not necessarily recommending people follow the easy path of domain parking. I’ll be posting resources regarding situations where you can monetize your domain much more effectively by educating yourself and building a site with minimal resources.
I believe you can make money but you should adhere to the spirit of the Internet by creating value in the process. So, that’s what I’ll try to do here. Thanks.
